Mucyo

Mucyo is a Rwandan / French contemporary Visual Artist who graduated from the Paris 8 University in Fine Arts.
He developed and kept exploring his own unique style based on the bleaching process of textile.Mucyo experimented the technique of “delavement” (bleach) for the first time in 2004 while he studied Arts at the University of Vincennes, Paris 8.
During the same period, he got more intimate with the universe of street art through influential graffiti artists from the Parisian scene.
From then on, he has created pictorial experiences by drawing inspiration from urban art and African culture. With an incisive and percussive graphic design, he draws faces, moments of life, personalities on dark fabrics, burned by bleach, accentuating their “vintage” quality.

“I have always had strong emotions in front of these old deteriorated photos, degraded by time: it is a very strong source of inspiration. My work is characterized by a two-stage pictorial act. The subject of the canvas and then the canvas itself. At first, I draw the subject on the canvas with bleach … Then, I work on the canvas itself with drips and splashes of bleach in order to magnify the subject. I lose control of the painting at this moment … the traces of bleach transform the canvas itself. (Only lately has he started to add Chinese ink and gold paint for more depth and emotion).
By creating my own unique, non-repeatable world, I can influence the direction, the movement of the burn … but never predefine it. Contrary to painting or the addition of extra elements for more emotion, my process is to burn the fabric and to remove the color and material in order to create the very emotion.”

I burn the dark side to bring out its light. My work is a mix of abstract and figurative (...) The goal is to leave a mark that must captivate the viewer's eye in an instant (...) making it a source of questioning.

Most of his creations are made during his various trips (to Africa, America, Asia and Europe) where he immerses himself into the local experience in order to absorb his surroundings as much as possible before paying tribute to the country’s history, culture or people with his pieces.

“Ultimately, that’s all I want to do, travelling, experimenting, connecting and sharing by creating……people give me hope and I have faith in them…what I give back is nothing compared to the richness they allowed me to feel and see just by opening their doors and hearts.”

“I want to give back to the people who inspired me…and to the ones who will inspire others… If I could be a source of inspiration to even one soul, then a part of my mission will be accomplished. That is why I value donations or fundraising for great human and animal causes, anything that touches social, environmental, political, and humanitarian issues is an essential topic to address and to engage the public on…. We are who we are because of others; it is the artist’s duty to raise awareness on issues, beauty or magic to anyone willing to open their eyes, minds and hearts…I communicate through a picture the way a musician uses a note to create an emotion..”.

With his paintings, Mucyo immediately captures our eyes and invites us to embrace a striking presence, strong and brief, an anonymous face or a graceful movement.

MUCYO merges the codes between contemporary art and street art. It exploits various cultural influences and transcends historical, mythological, iconic, ethnic, philosophical references….

He imposes his design on the canvas while letting it appropriate its own light in perfect mastery, thus creating intense, impactful and above all unique works.

It is perhaps because his works escape him that Mucyo can work the same model on several dozen canvases. Is he obsessed with a specific version of his model that he is trying to achieve? by all the versions it can create from the same model? How far must he go to free himself from these faces or characters that haunt him?

« Beyond the humanism and the strong integrity of THE Great Muhammad Ali, I wanted to represent the fight of the life of the champion of the people...

Through blood, sweats, tears and verbal jousting, the one who is considered the greatest of all time, the "G.O.A.T" (greatest of all time) has always risen, head held high and pride in his eyes. It remains the reflection and the symbol of the fighter for the social cause of his brothers and for human dignity

A fight which is still relevant in the face of violence and social injustice in the United States.. He initiated the fight, it's up to the artist to maintain it! » Mucyo
